MLOP-Ophthalmic Assistant Certificate Course

Course Overview

Bangladesh is a densely populated developing country. According to a 2001 estimate, the population was 123.1 million with an annual growth rate of 1.47% (BBS). Based on WHO's recommended ratio of 1 ophthalmologist per 100,000 population, about 1400 ophthalmologists are required. However, Bangladesh has only around 700, and they are underutilized due to the lack of trained support staff.

Instead of 2800 nurses and paramedics needed for those 700 ophthalmologists (1:4 ratio), only 618 mid-level eye care workers are available. The recently adopted National Eye Care Policy emphasizes the urgent need for such personnel.

To meet the goal of "Vision 2020: The Right to Sight", it's essential to strengthen mid-level human resource capacity. This course aims to fulfill that demand.

Ophthalmic Assistants will work in OPD, PSP, and OT to assist doctors in eye care services, enhancing both quantity and quality.
